Christian Graduate Programs in Psychology

By Bruce Narramore, PhD.

At the present time the following Christian institutions offer doctoral training programs in clinical psychology that are committed to helping students integrate their Christian faith with their psychological studies and that are also accredited by the American Psychological Association. While APA accreditation is not required to gain a good doctoral education, it is very helpful in getting a quality internship and it makes licensing easier in most states in the United States.

The schools are:

Rosemead School of Psychology, Biola University. I am biased toward this program since I am the founding dean and continue teaching and supervising in the doctoral program there. Rosemead was founded by the Narramore Christian Foundation in 1970 and merged with Biola University in 1977. It offers both the Ph.D. and Psy.D. in clinical psychology and has a strong emphasis on counseling and clinical practice, the integration of psychology and the scriptures, and the personal/spiritual growth of students. All students take a minimum of five psychotherapy lab courses where they receive supervision seeing patients from the modality of each course. All students also have on-campus counseling experiences and take at least four semesters of supervised clinical practicum as well as a fulltime year-long clinical internship.

"I personally know faculty at all of these institutions and each program has much to offer. They have some differences in clinical training emphasis and some denominational and doctrinal distinctives, but they each seek to provide a distinctively Christian perspective on clinical psychology. I suggest that you receive information from each of them before making a choice." – Dr. Bruce Narramore
